A social media commentator, Ojo Omotayo, has urged Nigerians to direct demands for accountability to elected political leaders rather than religious figures, arguing that governance responsibilities rest with public office holders.
In a post shared on his Facebook page, Omotayo defended the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, amid recurring calls by some Nigerians for prominent religious leaders to speak out on national issues.
According to him, Pastor Adeboye is neither a Local Government Chairman, a State Governor nor the President of Nigeria, but a spiritual leader whose primary responsibility is overseeing the affairs of the church.
Omotayo argued that many critics often take to social media to question why the respected cleric does not publicly comment on every development in the country, without considering the limitations and responsibilities associated with his position.
He maintained that Nigerians seeking change should focus on holding elected officials accountable for governance and policy decisions rather than placing what he described as undue pressure on religious leaders.
“If you truly want change, hold your Local Government Chairman accountable. Hold your Governor accountable. Hold your President accountable. These are the people elected to govern and make policies for the nation,” he stated.
The Facebook commentator further noted that Pastor Adeboye, despite his influence, remains a Nigerian citizen and should not be burdened with responsibilities that constitutionally belong to political office holders.
He called on citizens to play their respective roles in nation-building while ensuring that those entrusted with public office are held responsible for their actions and decisions.
The comments have generated discussion on social media regarding the role of religious leaders in public discourse and the extent to which they should engage in national political debates.
