Bride Price is being paid to Bride’s Family and not to the Bride. According to Urhobo culture and tradition one person cannot make a family, hence it’s illegal for a woman to return her own Bride Price by herself.
Procedurally in Urhobo Culture and tradition, the family of the woman will hold a meeting in respect of the present situation of their daughter. The ugly experience of their daughter’s Marriage will be discussed. After hearing from their daughter, they will send message to the husband requesting him to come together with his family on an agreed date so that they can also hear his own side of the story.
Both families will play their respective roles in order to settle the case before them amicably. But on the other hand, if the case ended in deadlock a day will be set aside for the husband Family to come and collect the Bride Price.
But if the husband’s family are not willing or cooperating, the wife’s family may exploit any available means within their capacity to return the Bride Price Because, by this time it has become a yoke they must remove from their daughter’s head.
Bride Price can be returned by taking it to the most senior man in the husband’s Family, the most eldest man in the husband’s town, Community Leader or Customary Court.
To the best of my knowledge and experience with due consultations from typical Urhobo sons and daughters that’s how it’s being done as far as Urhobo Culture and tradition is concerned.
Woman no dey return her own BRIDE PRICE by herself make una dey hear ooh. It’s a family to family affairs.That people are praising and hailing a Lady who returned her bride price and travel to Canada. It’s totally against Urhobo Culture and tradition. That a woman returned her bride price by paying it into the Bank account of her ex – husband is an abomination.
The day the Bride Price was paid, both of them received prayers from the most elderly man who called upon their Ancestors in notification about the Marriage and the first glass filled with Drink was offered to them to uphold the Marriage. Unknown to many people this is a covenant both of them entered as they become husband and wife. The only way to break this covenant is the day the Bride Price is returned and it must be done according to Urhobo culture and tradition.
If the woman say NO WAY again for her to return to her husband, preparation to return the Bride Price must be in top gear. Having sexual intercourse with any man will be Dangerous to both of them (the woman & her new suitor)
Take it or leave it, like it or hate it, Urhobo Cultural Marriage still remains one of the best. Church will never collect Bride Price and before Church will agree to join two people together in matrimony, they must meet the requirements of Traditional Marriage and by accordance with Bride and Groom FAMILIES.
Returning Bride Price by wife is very dangerous.
Remember, the only thing that separate ANGER from DANGER is D. Do not endanger your life because of anger to put yourself in DANGER.
