Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has expressed hope for a better Nigeria by 2031, saying she wants to leave the Presidential Villa and enjoy a country with improved infrastructure and easier travel in her later years.

Tinubu made the remarks on Friday, October 23, 2026, during the inauguration of the Abuja headquarters of the PBAT Door-to-Door Movement, a grassroots political mobilisation group campaigning for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.

“I want to leave Aso Rock, in 2031, by the grace of God, and enter a Nigeria that I, as a 70-something-year-old woman, will enjoy,” the First Lady said.

According to TheCable, she cited developments at Nigerian airports as one indication of progress, expressing the desire to travel more quickly and conveniently across the country.

“I want to get to the airport. I want to travel, you know, so quickly. And you can see our airports too are changing,” she said.

Remi Tinubu defends administration’s performance

During the event, the First Lady also responded to Nigerians who question the progress recorded under her husband’s administration, suggesting that those who fail to see the changes might need what she called “Bola Tinubu eyeglasses.”

The remark drew attention to her defence of the administration’s performance as the country approaches the 2027 general election.

She subsequently commissioned the movement’s Abuja headquarters and expressed support for President Tinubu’s re-election bid.

In her address, she urged members of the organisation to take their message directly to communities, engage residents respectfully and listen to their concerns, aspirations and expectations.

She said grassroots mobilisation should go beyond visiting homes to promoting messages of hope, peace, unity and development.

The PBAT Door-to-Door Movement, convened by Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, has been expanding its mobilisation activities across several states ahead of the next presidential election.

Other recent public engagements

The First Lady’s appearance at the campaign headquarters inauguration comes amid a series of public engagements focused on political mobilisation, education and youth development.

On October 23, she also performed the foundation-laying ceremony for a Renewed Hope Startup Hub in Wuye, Abuja. The project is a collaboration involving the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Japanese government through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

According to THISDAY, Tinubu described the initiative as part of efforts to promote technological advancement, digital inclusion, entrepreneurship and job creation among young Nigerians.

In another recent engagement, she announced a N2 billion Learners Retention Support Programme alongside plans to distribute two million packs of sanitary towels to girls in public basic education schools, linking the intervention to efforts to improve school retention and address menstrual hygiene challenges.

These engagements reflect the range of activities undertaken by the First Lady, spanning support for the administration’s political agenda and advocacy around education, technology and social development.

Her latest remarks, however, place particular emphasis on the Nigeria she hopes to experience after 2031, when she expects to leave the Presidential Villa.

Whether the improvements she described will translate into better everyday experiences for Nigerians remains a matter for citizens to assess through developments in infrastructure, transport, economic conditions and access to public services.
