What is the meaning of IGNORANCE OF THE LAW IS NOT AN EXCUSE:
I didn’t know it was illegal!”, the most famous lie in every Nigerian courtroom.
People, let’s get serious for 2 minutes.
Ignorance Of The Law Is No Excuse means:
Just because you didn’t know something was illegal doesn’t mean you won’t pay for it.
For Example:
1.You thought stëåling Wi-Fi was harmless? Law says, “Meet me in court.”
2. You thought downloading movies for free was okay? Law says, Surprise! Jail time.
3. You thought driving on the wrong side of the road was “just today”? Law says, “Not today, my friend.”
In Nigerian law, Section 22 of the Criminal Code says it loud and clear:
“Ignorance of the law does not afford any excuse for any act or omission which would otherwise constitute an offence.”
Translation:
Your “I didn’t know” is not a get-out-of-jail card.
Please learn a little law, or your “I didn’t know” will be your problem.
This is why I’m here to teach you the law.
Google is your best friend, but a lawyer is even better.
