The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has applauded the United States government for listing Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged violations of religious freedom and human rights abuses.
In a statement issued on Sunday, IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, described the U.S. designation as a welcome development and a validation of the group’s long-standing position on the state of governance and human rights in Nigeria.
Powerful recalled that a Canadian court had earlier declared Nigeria’s two major political parties — the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) — as terrorist organizations, citing widespread violence and state-sponsored brutality across the country.
He maintained that the latest U.S. action further exposed the deteriorating state of human rights and democratic values in Nigeria, urging the international community to intensify scrutiny of the Nigerian government’s activities.
