Media journalists covering the National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, have praised the Delta State Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) for providing a conducive working environment. The journalists appreciated the provision of a dedicated room to charge their phones, write stories, and relax in an air-conditioned space.
This gesture was particularly notable given the earlier controversy where local reporters were allegedly excluded from a cash gift meant for media personnel, with the amount or details not being disclosed. Despite this issue, the Delta State SWAN’s efforts to create a welcoming atmosphere for journalists have been commended.
The media centre has been a hub of activity, with journalists from various states gathering to share stories and experiences. The friendly atmosphere provided by the Delta State SWAN has been a highlight of the games, which commenced on August 26 and will run until September 7.
Some journalists noted that while the facilities provided were a welcome change, there were suggestions for improvement, such as installing Wi-Fi to enhance their work experience and organizing more press briefings to keep them informed about the games’ progress and developments. Additional press briefings could include daily updates from the organizing committee, press conferences with athletes and coaches, and special sessions with sports officials to provide insight into the games.
In a show of camaraderie, Southern and Northern media journalists are scheduled to engage in a friendly match at St. Patrick College, Asaba, on Thursday, September 4, 2025. This event promises to be an exciting way for journalists to bond and build relationships outside of their usual reporting duties.
