The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Delta State University (DELSU) has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of students reportedly arrested in Abraka, warning that it will embark on a peaceful protest if they are not freed within 24 hours.
In a statement issued on Wednesday and jointly signed by the Executive President, Amb. Barr. Comr. Kingsley Ovedje Dumuje, and the Secretary General, Hon. Comr. Oliseyum Victory, the union alleged that several DELSU students were arrested on the night of July 21, 2026, at about 10:00 p.m., without the presentation of an arrest warrant.
According to the statement, the students were subsequently transferred to Asaba, a development the union described as troubling, especially with the university’s second-semester examinations just weeks away.
The SUG expressed concern that the detention of the students could jeopardize their academic future, while also raising questions about their safety and fundamental rights.
While acknowledging the constitutional role of the Nigeria Police Force in maintaining law and order, the union maintained that the arrests were carried out under unclear circumstances and called for the immediate and unconditional release of all affected students.
The student leadership warned that failure to resolve the matter within 24 hours would leave it with no option but to mobilize students for a peaceful protest aimed at demanding justice and safeguarding the educational rights of its members.
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigeria Police Force had not issued an official statement regarding the arrests or the allegations raised by the Delta State University Students’ Union Government.
