Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has commended the Nigerian Army for its efforts in tackling insecurity across the state, describing the deployment of a new Brigade Commander as a major boost to peace and security.
The governor made the remarks on Friday while receiving the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, who paid him a courtesy visit at the Edo Government House in Benin City.
Okpebholo expressed appreciation to the Army chief for his commitment to addressing security challenges in Edo, particularly the planned establishment of the Nigerian Army’s 83 Division in the state.
He described the proposed division as a significant development, noting that the people of Edo were excited about its establishment.
The governor also singled out the Brigade Commander recently deployed to the state for commendation, describing his appointment as one of the best contributions to his administration’s efforts to tackle insecurity.
“Let me tell you, the best gift that you have given me is the Brigade Commander that you brought to Edo.
“Since I became the governor, his coming is like a comfort to me, because today, nobody is talking about kidnapping in our state,” Okpebholo said.
He recalled that residents of Ekpoma previously lived in fear due to insecurity but noted that the situation had improved significantly, allowing residents to return to their farms and other daily activities without fear.
“As I speak to you, Ekpoma is in peace. People can now go to their farms,” he said.
The governor also identified Okpella as another community that had experienced security challenges, adding that the security agencies had made significant efforts to restore peace and stability in the area.
He commended the Nigerian Army and other security agencies for their readiness to respond to security threats and assured the COAS of his administration’s continued support and cooperation.
Earlier, Shaibu said his visit to Edo was to attend several military functions and inspect projects aimed at improving the welfare and operational effectiveness of officers and soldiers.
The Army chief thanked the governor for his administration’s support for the Nigerian Army and commended his commitment to strengthening military operations in the state.
He also explained that senior officers promoted to the rank of Major-General were encouraged to give back to their communities in recognition of the role such communities played in their growth and development.
Shaibu wished the governor a prosperous tenure and expressed appreciation for the cordial relationship between the Nigerian Army and the Edo State Government.
Okpebholo, who said he had adjusted his travel plans to personally receive the Army chief, expressed confidence that the partnership between the state government and the military would continue to produce positive results.
