The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in the custody of bandits, describing the incident as a painful loss to his family, Katsina State, and the nation.
Major General Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information at Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters, died after reportedly suffering complications related to diabetes and hypertension during his captivity.
His death comes days after a viral video surfaced showing the retired military officer and his kidnapped wife appealing to the Katsina State Government to meet the demands of their abductors in exchange for their freedom.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Muazu, expressed the government’s deep sorrow over the development. He noted that the state government, working alongside security agencies, made extensive efforts to secure the retired general’s release, but those efforts ultimately proved unsuccessful.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits’ captivity. Despite the relentless and concerted efforts of the State Government and various security agencies to secure his safe release, the situation ended in this tragedy,” the statement read.
The government described the late officer’s abduction and death as a significant loss, not only to his immediate family and Katsina State but also to Nigeria, where he served with distinction during his military career.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda extended his condolences to the bereaved family and the nation, describing the incident as a tragic reminder of the growing security challenges facing communities across the country.
According to the governor, the unfortunate development underscores the urgent need for stronger collaboration and a more coordinated response in the fight against banditry and other criminal activities threatening peace and stability.
He called for renewed commitment from all stakeholders to tackle insecurity and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
