Former President Donald Trump has acknowledged that the U.S. Constitution does not allow him to seek a third term in office, putting to rest days of speculation sparked by some of his allies suggesting there might be a way for him to do so.
Speaking during a recent CNN interview, Trump said it was “pretty clear” that the Constitution bars presidents from serving more than two terms, referring to the 22nd Amendment, which limits the presidency to two elected terms.
The remarks come after a wave of commentary from Trump supporters and political figures who floated the idea of changing or reinterpreting the constitutional term limit if Trump were to win back the White House in 2024. The former president’s clarification appears aimed at quelling rumors that he planned to challenge the long-standing rule.
While Trump has often criticized constitutional limits and political traditions in the past, his statement reaffirms that even he recognizes the legal boundary set by the nation’s founding document.
