Unclaimed Bodies at Benue Teaching Hospital Moved for Mass Burial

MAKURDI, Benue State — A number of unclaimed bodies reportedly deposited at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Makurdi, have been moved to Bensasa for mass burial.

According to a report by Aljazeera New, the deceased include men, women and young people who were brought to the hospital but were never claimed by relatives or identified before the hospital took steps to have them buried.

The report said some of the deceased may have died without proper identification, while in other cases, their relatives may be unaware of their deaths, unable to afford burial arrangements or could not be reached.

The movement of the bodies for mass burial was reportedly necessitated by the hospital’s inability to keep unclaimed remains indefinitely, owing to health, mortuary and other regulatory requirements.

The development has raised concerns about the plight of unidentified and unclaimed deceased persons, as well as the need for stronger systems for identification, tracing of relatives and support for families unable to afford burial arrangements.

The report noted that behind every unclaimed body is a personal story and possibly a family that may still be searching, waiting or grieving without knowing the fate of a loved one.

It described the development as a sobering reminder of the importance of maintaining strong family and community ties, while urging relevant authorities to strengthen mechanisms for identifying deceased persons and reconnecting them with their families.

The situation also highlights broader challenges surrounding the management of unidentified and unclaimed remains in hospitals, particularly where families cannot be located or lack the resources to take responsibility for burial.

As the bodies are moved for burial, the development serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of ensuring dignity for the dead, regardless of whether their identities or families are known.
