US House Votes to End Trump’s Iran War as More Republicans Break Ranks

The United States House of Representatives on Tuesday voted to approve a measure seeking to compel President Donald Trump to end the war with Iran, delivering another congressional challenge to the administration’s handling of the conflict.

The vote marked the third time the Democratic-led House has moved to require Trump to withdraw US troops from Iran, with seven Republicans joining Democrats in supporting the latest resolution.

The number of Republican supporters increased from four in the previous votes, signalling growing divisions within the Republican Party over the administration’s military actions in Iran.

Three Republicans — Reps. Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Zach Nunn of Iowa, and Nancy Mace of South Carolina — joined four lawmakers who had previously supported similar measures: Thomas Massie of Kentucky, Tom Barrett of Michigan, Warren Davidson of Ohio and Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania.

Nunn, in a statement posted on X after the vote, said he opposed another prolonged military engagement.

“I will not support another open-ended war,” Nunn said, adding that the United States could defend its citizens, maintain pressure on Iran and pursue peace while ensuring that Congress exercises its constitutional responsibilities.

Although House Republican leaders have not formally required members to vote for or against the resolutions, Trump has publicly criticised Republicans who have opposed his Iran policy.

The latest House action comes weeks before the November midterm elections and is being viewed by Democrats as one of their most significant attempts yet to put Republicans on record over the administration’s military campaign.

A previous congressional effort to limit Trump’s military authority in Iran also exposed divisions among Senate Republicans. While enough Republican senators initially appeared ready to support the measure, pressure from the White House reportedly resulted in one senator changing his vote, preventing the initiative from advancing.

Democrats are expected to make another attempt in the Senate later this week, although it remains uncertain whether the measure can secure enough support to pass.

The conflict has also generated concern among Americans over its economic consequences. Fuel prices have risen amid the hostilities, with diesel prices reportedly exceeding $6 per gallon in parts of the United States.

Public opinion has also reflected growing concern about the military campaign. According to a CNN poll conducted during the summer, 67 per cent of respondents said Trump’s decisions regarding military action in Iran had harmed the United States.

Democrats have increasingly used congressional votes to force Republican lawmakers to take public positions on the conflict, arguing that the administration’s military actions require greater congressional oversight.

The House vote therefore sets up another potential confrontation between Congress and the White House over presidential war powers, US military involvement in Iran and the constitutional role of lawmakers in decisions involving prolonged military action.
