The United States has withdrawn most of its military personnel deployed to the Lake Chad Basin as part of ongoing security cooperation in the region but has reaffirmed its commitment to intelligence sharing and counterterrorism support for Nigeria and its regional partners.
Despite the drawdown, U.S. officials said security cooperation with Nigeria remains intact, with intelligence sharing, strategic advisory support, and capacity-building efforts continuing to help combat terrorist groups operating across the Lake Chad Basin.
The move is part of a broader review of U.S. military deployments overseas and is not expected to affect existing intelligence collaboration with Nigeria in the fight against insurgency and other transnational security threats.
Security analysts note that intelligence cooperation has remained a key pillar of the U.S.-Nigeria security partnership, particularly in tracking the activities of terrorist groups and supporting regional efforts to improve border security and counter violent extremism.
The Lake Chad Basin, which spans Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon, has long been a hotspot for insurgent activities, prompting sustained collaboration between regional governments and international partners to restore peace and stability.
U.S. authorities reiterated that while the military footprint in the region has been reduced, Washington remains committed to supporting Nigeria and its allies through intelligence cooperation, training, and other security assistance aimed at strengthening regional security.
