President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to embrace unity, fairness and sportsmanship as the party kicks off its nationwide primary elections ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the President described the primaries as a critical moment for the APC, stressing that the exercise would test the party’s internal cohesion and commitment to democratic values.
Tinubu noted that the APC, founded on the principles of progressive politics, consensus-building and sacrifice, is preparing for its fourth electoral cycle since its formation.
According to him, the primaries which begin with the House of Representatives contests and conclude with the presidential primary on May 25, should be seen as more than just a candidate selection process.
He said the exercise presents an opportunity for party members to reaffirm the ideals and unity that have sustained the APC over the years.
The President also commended ongoing consultations among party leaders aimed at producing consensus candidates in line with the Electoral Act and the APC constitution, noting that the arrangement could help reduce internal disputes and strengthen party harmony.
He encouraged party stakeholders to adopt consensus where possible to ensure a peaceful and seamless primary process.
Tinubu, however, warned that where consensus fails, aspirants and delegates must conduct themselves in a peaceful, democratic and responsible manner throughout the exercise.
He cautioned against divisive politics, saying the APC cannot afford actions capable of weakening party unity or undermining Nigeria’s democratic process.
The President further advised victorious aspirants to remain humble in victory, while urging those who may not emerge successful to accept the outcome in good faith and remain loyal to the party.
