Hundreds of Nigerians on Monday defied a Federal High Court order to protest along Abuja’s streets, demanding the release of leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Protesters were seen chanting ‘Free Nnamdi Kanu’ as they march on a day commemorating the 5th anniversary of the infamous #EndSARS protest.

Kanu has been in detention since 2021 when he was extradited from Kenya. He is currently facing terrorism charges.

This morning’s march comes amid warnings from the Nigeria police that it will deal decisively with individuals who protest around the official residence of the president of Nigeria, Aso Rock Villa.

Local media reports say police fired tear gas and live bullets to disperse the gathering protesters while arresting Kanu’s lawyer.
