Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Nyesom Wike, has condemned the alleged illegal occupation of a disputed parcel of land in Abuja by soldiers reportedly acting on the orders of a former Chief of Naval Staff.
Describing the development as lawless, unacceptable, and an abuse of power, Wike said no individual—no matter their past position—would be allowed to intimidate government authorities or obstruct lawful enforcement in the nation’s capital.
Wike made the remarks on Tuesday during an on-the-spot inspection of the contested site following reports that soldiers had driven away officials of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) who were on enforcement duty.
“You are aware that the land departments and the Development Control have the mandate to monitor illegal development and land grabbing,” the minister said. “When this was brought to my attention, I instructed them to ensure that nothing takes place there because there were no legal documents—no regional approval, no valid acquisition.”
The minister revealed that FCTA officials were chased from the site by armed soldiers allegedly acting under the orders of a retired naval officer.
“I was informed that the soldiers had to chase them away, and I thought that was an illegal act,” Wike said. “Today, while I was in the office, I received another call that the military had taken over the place. I had to come myself to see things. It’s really unfortunate.”
Expressing disappointment, Wike said it was shocking that a former senior military officer would resort to intimidation instead of following due process.
“I don’t understand how someone who once held such a high position cannot approach my office to resolve issues legally. But simply because he’s a military man, he thinks he can use that to intimidate Nigerians. I am not one of those who will succumb to blackmail or intimidation,” he declared.
According to Wike, the alleged developers failed to present any valid documentation when asked by FCTA officials.
“The Director of Development Control asked for documents—they had none. He asked for building approval—they couldn’t provide it. How can we continue to allow lawlessness to prevail? What about ordinary Nigerians who don’t have soldiers backing them?” he asked.
The minister warned that the FCTA would not tolerate the misuse of military power to obstruct legitimate urban regulation, insisting that the law must apply equally to all citizens.
“I have spoken to the Chief of Defence Staff and the Chief of Naval Staff. They assured me that the matter will be resolved. We’re not here to have a shootout with anybody or cause chaos. But I will not allow this to happen,” Wike stated.
He reiterated his commitment to restoring order and transparency in Abuja’s land administration, vowing that all illegal developments—no matter who is behind them—will be stopped.
“Whether it’s a former Chief of Naval Staff or anyone else, the law must take its course. No one will be allowed to use power or influence to grab land that belongs to the government,” Wike said.
