As the Delta State House of Assembly resumes plenary anytime soon after the Christmas and New Year break, the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, CPS, Nkem Nwaeke, has said that 2026 holds great promise for a productive legislature and a more prosperous Delta state.

Speaking on prospects and expectations in 2026, Nwaeke stated that the 8th Delta Assembly, under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, will deepen its commitment to people-oriented governance in the state.

The CPS averred that the new year offers a renewed opportunity for robust lawmaking, effective oversight, and constructive engagement with the executive and other stakeholders for the overall development of the state.

He said the Christmas and New Year recess provided members the opportunity to consult widely with constituents, review policy priorities, and reflect on the socio-economic realities facing the people.

Nwaeke maintained that as plenary resumes, the Assembly is poised to translate the engagements with the people into concrete legislative actions that address pressing issues such as economic growth, job creation, security, infrastructure development, education, healthcare delivery, and social welfare.

He said, “In 2026, the Assembly is expected to prioritize the passage of critical bills that will strengthen institutions, improve transparency, and enhance service delivery.

“Legislative interventions aimed at boosting internally generated revenue, supporting small and medium-scale enterprises, and creating an enabling environment for investment are anticipated to feature prominently in the House’s agenda.”

The CPS stated further that under the pragmatic leadership of the Speaker, oversight functions will remain a core focus, saying that the Assembly will continue to ensure accountability in the implementation of government policies and projects.

Nwaeke emphasized that oversight is crucial in guaranteeing that public resources are judiciously utilized and government programmes deliver tangible benefits to citizens across the state.

“Speaker, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, has consistently emphasized the importance of cooperation and mutual respect among the arms of government. In 2026, the Assembly is expected to sustain its harmonious working relationship with the executive, while maintaining its independence as enshrined in the constitution. Such synergy is vital for the timely passage of bills and the smooth execution of development plans.

“Equally important is the Assembly’s commitment to inclusiveness and responsiveness. As the year unfolds, greater engagement with relevant stakeholders, including the media, is expected, ensuring that legislation reflects the aspirations of all segments of society,” Nwaeke added.

The CPS expressed firm optimism that his boss, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, who is the National Treasurer of the Conference of Speakers of State Houses of Assembly, will continue to encourage diligent service to the state.

“Deltans look up to the Assembly not only for laws, but for leadership, advocacy, and solutions. The head of the team, Mr Speaker, Rt Hon Emomotimi Dennis Guwor will continue to encourage his colleagues to achieve more in that regard.

“At every opportunity, Mr Speaker always calls for renewed vigor, patriotism, and a deep sense of responsibility in members’ approach to legislative assignments. I have no doubt therefore, that with collective resolve and purposeful leadership, 2026 holds great promise for a productive legislature and a more prosperous Delta state,” Nwaeke said.
