The Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori, has said his administration is deliberately transforming the development narrative in riverine communities through strategic infrastructure investments and people-centred policies.
Oborevwori made the remark on Tuesday while commissioning the reconstructed 31-kilometre Ohoror–Bomadi Road, a key corridor linking several local government areas in the state.
According to the governor, the project represents a major step in his administration’s commitment to equitable development, particularly in historically underserved riverine areas.
“We are resolved to rewrite the story of our riverine communities. Our administration is committed to ensuring that sustainable development gets to every part of the state, regardless of terrain or location,” Oborevwori said.
He noted that the road, which connects communities across Ughelli North, Ughelli South, Patani, Burutu and Bomadi, will significantly improve connectivity and stimulate socio-economic activities across the region.
The governor explained that the project would enhance trade, improve access to essential services and reduce travel time for residents and businesses operating in the affected areas.
Oborevwori stressed that infrastructure development remains a key driver of economic growth, noting that improved road networks would help farmers access markets, attract investments and strengthen rural-urban integration.
Providing details of the project, the governor said the construction involved specialised engineering solutions designed for the swampy terrain, including sand filling, soil stabilisation, concrete reinforcement, embankment protection and asphalt surfacing.
According to him, the road spans between 6.5 metres and 10.3 metres in width, with hard shoulders constructed in some sections to enhance safety and durability.
Oborevwori also highlighted other projects being executed across the state in areas such as roads, bridges and education infrastructure, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the MORE Agenda built on fairness, justice and equity.
He further disclosed that the State Executive Council had recently approved projects worth over N400 billion across critical sectors including infrastructure, health, education, power, judiciary and security.
On electricity supply, the governor said the administration was implementing policy reforms and infrastructure upgrades, including the extension of transmission lines and installation of transformers in previously underserved communities.
He added that several communities that had been without electricity for more than a decade had now been reconnected to the national grid, improving living standards and economic opportunities.
The governor also announced plans to strengthen security across the state, including the construction of police divisions in all 25 local government areas and the establishment of a Special Protection Base to enhance safety.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, said the 31-kilometre road project passes through multiple communities and was built using modern engineering techniques to ensure durability in the difficult terrain.
In his welcome remarks, the Chairman of Bomadi Local Government Area, Hon. Dagidi Andaye, thanked the governor for what he described as a historic intervention in the area, noting that the locality had not witnessed such a major project in more than 16 years.
He said the road would reduce accidents, improve livelihoods and ease the movement of people and goods across the state.
Community leaders and stakeholders, including Nicholas Mutu, James Manager and Bola Tinubu, were among those who commended the governor’s inclusive governance style and commitment to development.
They noted that the completion of the road has brought relief to residents who had long faced economic hardship due to poor access and high transportation costs.
The commissioning ceremony attracted a large crowd of residents, political leaders and traditional rulers, reflecting widespread appreciation for the project and its anticipated impact on the communities.
