Popular Nigerian TikToker Peller has responded to the controversy surrounding his recent visit to the Benin Traditional Council, after the council condemned the trip as unauthorised and a breach of palace protocol.
The council had earlier criticised the visit and summoned Peller to appear before a committee of chiefs. It also warned that a queen linked to the encounter could face removal from the palace.
In a statement released on Thursday, Peller’s management refuted the claims, insisting that the visit was properly arranged through official channels and was never intended to disrespect the customs of the Benin Kingdom.
According to the statement, the team formally submitted a request letter to the palace on February 23, seeking approval for a courtesy visit initially scheduled for March 3 but later rescheduled to March 6. A copy of the letter was also provided as evidence.
The management explained that although they were informed in advance that the Oba would not be available, they were received at the palace by chiefs, who welcomed them and guided them through its history, culture, and traditions.
They acknowledged, however, that certain aspects of the visit may have been perceived as inappropriate, stressing that there was no intention to offend.
“We would like to sincerely address the concerns surrounding Peller’s recent visit to the Benin Kingdom. First and foremost, we acknowledge the deep cultural significance of the Benin Kingdom and extend our utmost respect to its traditions, heritage and people,” the statement read.
It further noted that the visit was facilitated by Uyiekpen Ogiefa, son of Chief Courage Uyi Ogiefa, and that all arrangements were made in line with palace awareness.
While reiterating respect for tradition, the team admitted that “certain moments during the visit may have been perceived as inappropriate,” attributing any missteps to human error, excitement, and the warm reception they received.
The statement emphasised that Peller remains committed to promoting Nigerian culture and would never deliberately disrespect the heritage he seeks to showcase globally.
“We, however, acknowledge that there may have been misconceptions arising from the visit and sincerely apologise for any such misunderstandings. We appreciate the feedback and the continued support,” the statement added.
