Panic and tension engulfed residents, commuters, and students around the University of Benin (UNIBEN) on Monday after a young man was reportedly shot multiple times and killed near the institution’s main gate in Benin City, Edo State.

Eyewitness accounts indicated that the incident occurred in the busy area close to the university entrance, causing fear and confusion among students and passersby as people fled the scene for safety.

Sources within the area disclosed that the unidentified victim was attacked by suspected gunmen who allegedly opened fire on him before escaping from the scene. The motive behind the attack had not been confirmed as of the time of filing this report.

The incident reportedly disrupted normal activities around the university environment, with many residents and students expressing concern over the growing security challenges in the area.

Authorities were said to have arrived at the scene shortly after the attack, while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the killing are expected to commence.

As of press time, the Edo State Police Command had yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.

Residents have called on security agencies to intensify efforts to safeguard lives and restore confidence within the UNIBEN community and its environs.
