The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has distanced its students and staff from the violent clash that reportedly occurred outside the institution’s Ugbowo Campus in Benin City, Edo State.

In an official statement issued by the university management and made Available to newsmen, the institution clarified that preliminary findings revealed the incident was linked to suspected cult-related activities outside the campus environment and did not involve any member of the university community.

The statement, signed by the institution’s Director of Public Relations and Protocol, Dr. Benedicta Ehanire, expressed regret over the reported loss of life associated with the clash.

“The University of Benin has dissociated its staff and students from the violent clash outside the Ugbowo Campus of the institution,” the statement read.

“Preliminary reports indicate that the said incident is a fallout of cult activities outside the campus and does not involve any University staff or student.”

While condoling with those affected by the incident, the university management urged students, staff, and members of the university community to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding.

Management further encouraged students to continue their academic activities peacefully without fear, assuring that normal activities on campus remain uninterrupted.

The incident, which reportedly caused panic around the university environment, has raised renewed concerns over security challenges in parts of Benin City.

Security agencies are expected to continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding the clash and the reported fatality.

The statement was dated May 10, 2026.
