Lawmaker and actor-turned-politician, Desmond Elliot, has publicly apologised to his political mentor and Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, over alleged misunderstandings arising from recent political developments in Lagos State.
Elliot made the apology during an appearance on TVC’s “Your View” programme on Friday, stating that any offence caused during the course of political engagements was unintentional.
According to him, Gbajabiamila played a major role in shaping his political career, describing the former Speaker of the House of Representatives as his “egbon” and mentor.
“I’m not saying, oh, yes, media will come out, oh yes, Desmond begs again. Yes, because he’s my egbon. And I grew up learning everything I knew in politics through him,” Elliot said during the interview.
The apology comes amid lingering tensions linked to the leadership crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly. Earlier reports had indicated that Gbajabiamila allegedly faced pressure at the Presidency over intelligence reports accusing Elliot of involvement in moves to impeach Lagos Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa.
Gbajabiamila had previously disclosed that President Bola Tinubu confronted him over the allegations, which Elliot denied.
Speaking further, Elliot acknowledged that misunderstandings were inevitable in political relationships and appealed for forgiveness.
“To err is human, to forgive is divine. So I’m sorry, my daddy, if I’ve offended you in any way,” he said.
The Surulere lawmaker also extended an apology to whom he described as the “matriarch of Surulere,” expressing regret over any offence caused.
Despite the controversy, Elliot maintained that his focus remained on strengthening the party and delivering democratic dividends to his constituents.
“But I will keep keeping the party strong. And to all Surulerians, my scorecard is there. You know the things I’ve done to make Surulere a better place,” he added.
