The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially confirmed former Minister of Transportation and ex-Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, as the running mate to its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, ahead of the 2027 general election.

The announcement, made on Monday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, puts an end to weeks of speculation surrounding Atiku’s choice of a vice-presidential candidate. According to the party, Amaechi’s emergence followed extensive consultations with party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women groups, as well as representatives from the country’s six geopolitical zones.

With the confirmation, the ADC will head into the 2027 presidential race with an Atiku-Amaechi ticket, combining the political experience of the former Vice President and the former Rivers State governor, who also served as Minister of Transportation.

Amaechi, a prominent figure in Nigerian politics, was among the aspirants who contested the ADC presidential primary but finished behind Atiku Abubakar. Party officials described his selection as a strategic move aimed at strengthening the ADC’s national appeal and consolidating support across key regions of the country.

Political observers believe the Atiku-Amaechi partnership could reshape the dynamics of the 2027 election as opposition parties continue to position themselves against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The ADC leadership expressed confidence that the ticket would provide Nigerians with a credible alternative and a strong platform to address the nation’s economic and governance challenges ahead of the polls.
