The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Tunji Disu, has reassured officers and personnel of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) that the proposed creation of state police will not jeopardize their careers, ranks, or retirement benefits.

Speaking amid growing discussions on the decentralization of policing in Nigeria, the IGP urged officers not to panic over the prospect of state-controlled police formations, emphasizing that the Nigeria Police Force would continue to exist alongside any new policing structure that may be introduced.

“There is no reason to panic. The creation of state police does not mean the abolition of the Nigeria Police Force. We remain the NPF,” the IGP said.

He further assured officers that their employment status and welfare packages would remain intact.

“It will not affect your rank. You will not lose your job or forfeit your pension. Your future remains protected,” he stated.

The reassurance comes amid concerns among some police personnel over the possible implications of establishing state police, a proposal that has generated nationwide debate as stakeholders seek solutions to Nigeria’s security challenges.

The IGP maintained that any reforms aimed at decentralizing policing would be implemented in a manner that safeguards the interests of officers and strengthens the country’s overall security architecture.

He urged personnel to remain focused on their duties and continue to uphold professionalism in service to the nation.
