The African Policy and Research Consortium (APRC) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to nominate former President Goodluck Jonathan as Nigeria’s candidate for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations, describing the former Nigerian leader as a statesman with the experience and global standing required for the role.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the policy group said Jonathan’s record in governance, diplomacy, conflict resolution, and democratic leadership makes him a strong contender to lead the world’s foremost multilateral organisation.

The consortium noted that the office of the UN Secretary-General demands an individual of proven integrity, exceptional diplomatic skill, international credibility, and the ability to build consensus among member states while promoting global peace, sustainable development, and respect for international law.

According to the APRC, Jonathan possesses many of these qualities, citing his peaceful concession of defeat in Nigeria’s 2015 presidential election, his continued involvement in election observation missions across Africa, and his mediation efforts in regional political crises under the auspices of international and continental organisations.

The group argued that Jonathan’s post-presidential engagements have earned him widespread respect within the global diplomatic community, making him well-positioned to represent Africa at the highest level of international leadership.

It urged President Tinubu to seize the opportunity to project Nigeria’s leadership on the global stage by formally backing Jonathan’s candidacy whenever the selection process begins.

The consortium added that supporting a qualified Nigerian for the office would not only enhance the country’s international profile but also reinforce Africa’s longstanding aspiration for greater representation in key global institutions.

The position of United Nations Secretary-General is widely regarded as one of the world’s most demanding diplomatic offices. The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate political neutrality, extensive international experience, outstanding leadership, and the ability to work with the UN’s 193 member states in addressing global challenges ranging from peace and security to climate change, humanitarian crises, and sustainable development.
