The NYSC Online Community has advised members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) against forcing themselves into romantic relationships simply because they are serving with someone or feel pressured by their peers.
The community, in a message to corps members, described the National Youth Service year as an important period for self-discovery, career development, networking and preparation for the future.
According to the group, corps members should not feel compelled to fall in love because their colleagues are in relationships or because they are afraid of missing out.
“Love should come naturally, not through pressure, loneliness, or fear of missing out,” the community said.
It urged corps members who do not have genuine feelings for someone to avoid pretending or entering relationships simply to conform to social expectations.
The NYSC Online Community encouraged corps members to remain focused on their personal goals, build meaningful connections and make decisions that would contribute positively to their lives beyond the service year.
“Protect your heart, stay focused on your goals, and remember why you started the journey,” it advised.
The community also reminded corps members that although the one-year service programme would eventually come to an end, decisions made during the period could have lasting consequences.
“NYSC will end, but the decisions you make during the service year can shape your future. Choose wisely,” the community said.
The advice comes amid the social and emotional experiences that often accompany the NYSC programme, where young Nigerians from different backgrounds live, work and interact in new environments.
The community urged corps members to make the most of their service year by prioritising personal growth, career development and healthy relationships rather than allowing loneliness or peer pressure to dictate their choices.
