The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned manufacturers of alcoholic beverages that continued production or distribution of sachet and sub-200ml PET/plastic alcoholic drinks will attract regulatory sanctions.
The agency said manufacturers who fail to comply with the directive will face enforcement measures, including the continued closure of non-compliant production facilities and other sanctions prescribed by law.
NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, reiterated the warning while emphasising the agency’s determination to enforce the Federal Government’s directive restricting the production and circulation of alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and small-sized plastic containers.
According to Adeyeye, manufacturers are expected to comply fully with the regulatory directive rather than continue producing or allowing the affected products to remain in circulation.
She warned that facilities found violating the directive would be subjected to regulatory action, stressing that NAFDAC would not hesitate to sustain the closure of offending facilities where necessary.
The renewed warning follows the government’s longstanding concerns over the widespread availability of small-sized alcoholic drinks, particularly sachet and sub-200ml PET products, and their potential accessibility to minors and other vulnerable groups.
NAFDAC has maintained that the restrictions are part of broader measures aimed at protecting public health and reducing the harmful consumption of alcohol, especially among young people.
Adeyeye said the agency would continue monitoring manufacturers and the market to ensure compliance, adding that regulatory action would be taken against businesses that disregard the directive.
The NAFDAC chief urged manufacturers to adjust their production and distribution practices accordingly, warning that non-compliance could result in further enforcement measures beyond the closure of facilities.
