ASABA — A public affairs commentator, Macdith Empire, has argued that discussions at the recent Delta State Investment Summit underscored the urgent need for improved electricity supply as a prerequisite for industrialisation, investment and economic development in the state.

In a commentary titled, “A Summit of Truth: When the World Came to Talk Development, Delta Heard a Wake-Up Call,” the writer said one of the dominant themes that emerged from the summit was the importance of reliable power infrastructure in attracting investors.

According to the commentary, business leader Tony Elumelu stressed the critical role of electricity in economic development, declaring that industries cannot thrive without a stable power supply.

The writer also referenced governance expert Prof. PLO Lumumba, saying his remarks similarly emphasised the need for leadership that prioritises development and critical infrastructure over politics.

Macdith Empire argued that despite Delta State’s vast oil and gas resources, inadequate electricity supply continues to limit industrial growth and investment opportunities.

The commentary maintained that governments seeking to attract investors must first provide essential infrastructure, particularly reliable electricity, describing power supply as the foundation for sustainable economic development.

The author further contended that political considerations often hinder the implementation of development projects, urging leaders to prioritise initiatives based on their potential benefits to citizens rather than partisan interests.

The article also highlighted the Okpai Independent Power Project (IPP), noting that Senator Ned Munir Nwoko has consistently advocated for the completion and effective utilisation of the Okpai Phase II project, as well as the development of the Ogwashi-Uku Dam, which he believes could support Delta State’s long-term economic growth.

According to the writer, supporters of the senator have called for broader collaboration on such infrastructure projects, arguing that development initiatives should transcend political affiliations.

The commentary concluded that the Delta State Investment Summit should serve as a reminder that infrastructure—particularly electricity—remains central to attracting investment, creating jobs and driving economic transformation.

It urged political leaders to place development above partisan interests, arguing that history ultimately judges governments by tangible achievements such as infrastructure, industrial growth and improvements in citizens’ quality of life rather than political rhetoric.
