Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on people of African descent to preserve the continent’s rich cultural heritage, strengthen unity across Africa and the diaspora, and invest more in education, empowerment and the well-being of the people.
The First Lady made the call in her message to commemorate the 2026 International Day for People of African Descent, themed, “People of African Descent: Recognition, Justice, and Development.”
Oluremi Tinubu said the occasion provides an opportunity to celebrate the rich heritage, resilience and remarkable contributions of people of African descent to the advancement of humanity.
She, however, noted that the commemoration should also serve as a reminder of the collective responsibility to protect human rights and create opportunities that enable every individual to realise their full potential.
According to her, preserving Africa’s cultural heritage is essential to maintaining the continent’s identity and ensuring that future generations remain connected to their history, values and traditions.
She also stressed the importance of strengthening bonds among Africans on the continent and in the diaspora, while promoting initiatives that support education, economic empowerment and improved well-being.
The First Lady urged Africans to use the occasion to renew their commitment to justice, equality, inclusion and sustainable development, saying these remain critical to building a better future for people of African descent.
