Morning Erections Don’t Follow a Fixed Schedule, Health Analyst Mary Sylvester Tells Men

Morning erections do not have to occur at the same time every day, and not noticing one upon waking does not necessarily indicate an underlying health problem, according to health analyst Mary Sylvester.

In a health advisory directed at men, Sylvester explained that morning erections may occur at different times, depending partly on sleep patterns and the stage of sleep a person experiences before waking up.

She noted that some men may wake up with an erection at 5 a.m. on one day and at 7 a.m. on another, while others may not notice one at all on certain mornings.

According to her, morning erections are commonly associated with rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, a stage during which erections naturally occur. Whether a man notices one upon waking may depend on when he wakes up in relation to his sleep cycle.

Sylvester identified sleep quality, stress, anxiety, hormonal fluctuations, age and general health as factors that may influence the frequency or visibility of morning erections.

She explained that poor sleep and irregular sleeping schedules can affect normal sleep-related erections, while emotional stress may also influence sexual function.

The health analyst further noted that testosterone levels fluctuate throughout the day and are generally higher in the morning. She added that changes in age, certain medical conditions and some medications may also affect erectile function.

Sylvester cautioned men against assuming that the absence of a morning erection automatically means they have erectile dysfunction, low testosterone or infertility.

She stressed that occasional variations in morning erections should not be used as the sole basis for diagnosing a sexual health problem.

However, she advised men who experience a persistent reduction in erections, particularly when accompanied by difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection during sexual activity, to consult a qualified healthcare professional for proper evaluation.

The analyst also warned against self-diagnosis and reliance on supplements or unverified remedies without appropriate medical advice.

She encouraged men to pay attention to persistent changes in their sexual health rather than isolated daily variations, noting that morning erections do not necessarily follow a fixed timetable.
