The visit of former First Lady, Aisha Buhari, to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has triggered political speculation about possible new alliances ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.
Atiku, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), disclosed the meeting in a social media post, describing the visit by the wife of late former President Muhammadu Buhari as “warm and deeply appreciated”.
In his post, Atiku highlighted the need for political leaders to prioritise the welfare of Nigerians amid rising economic hardship, stressing that the country needs an economy that provides opportunities and improves the living conditions of citizens.
He wrote: “Today, I was delighted to receive former First Lady, Aisha Buhari. Her visit was warm and deeply appreciated. Beyond the courtesies of the occasion, it was also a reminder of the urgent responsibility before all who seek a better Nigeria: To put the welfare, dignity and future of our people first.
“Across our country, families are being stretched by the rising cost of food, transport, education, healthcare and other basic necessities. Nigerians deserve an economy that rewards hard work, restores opportunity and allows every family to live with dignity and hope. That is the Nigeria we must build together, a country that works for its people again.”
Although neither party has publicly described the meeting as a political endorsement, its timing has generated considerable debate, particularly as political consultations and realignments gather momentum ahead of the 2027 elections.
The development is attracting attention because of the political influence associated with the late Muhammadu Buhari, who enjoyed substantial electoral support across Northern Nigeria during his political career.
Buhari’s popularity in the region was considered a major factor in the electoral success of the All Progressives Congress (APC), particularly during the 2023 presidential election, when his political base formed an important part of the coalition that brought President Bola Tinubu to power.
Against this background, Aisha Buhari’s meeting with Atiku, an opposition presidential hopeful, has been interpreted by some political observers as a potentially significant development in the evolving political calculations ahead of 2027.
Some commentators believe the meeting could signal growing dissatisfaction among individuals associated with the former president’s political circle over the direction of the Tinubu administration.
Others have suggested that it could be an indication of possible political realignments within influential northern political networks.
The visit has also generated reactions on social media, with one X user asking: “Aisha Buhari visited Atiku yesterday, will Tinubu sleep?”
The comment reflects the political significance some Nigerians have attached to the meeting and the possibility of its implications for the ruling APC.
However, there is currently no public confirmation that Aisha Buhari has endorsed Atiku’s presidential ambition or that the political support base associated with her late husband has been transferred to the ADC candidate.
Nevertheless, the meeting has added another dimension to the emerging political conversations ahead of 2027, with attention likely to remain on how influential political figures and northern power blocs position themselves as the contest for the presidency approaches.
