WARRI — The recently concluded Warri Regatta has highlighted the tourism, cultural and economic potential of the waterways and heritage of the Warri Kingdom, with the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, describing the event as more than a celebration of tradition and history.

The Olu said the regatta provided an opportunity to showcase the rich stories, traditions and culture of the people, while drawing attention to the economic opportunities that could emerge from the Kingdom’s heritage and waterways.

In a message following the event, Ogiame Atuwatse III said the regatta demonstrated that cultural heritage should not only be preserved but could also serve as an asset for tourism development, enterprise and sustainable economic growth.

“From the rivers that have carried our history to the generations who will carry it forward, the just concluded Regatta, beyond being a celebration on the waters that surround us, showcased the immense tourism potential embedded in our stories, traditions and culture, and the tremendous value that remains to be unearthed,” the Olu said.

He noted that the event offered a reminder of the importance of connecting the Kingdom’s history and cultural identity with opportunities for development.

According to him, the boats that sailed from Warri to Ode-Itsekiri represented more than the pageantry associated with the regatta, as they symbolised the history and aspirations of the people.

“As the boats sailed from Warri to Ode-Itsekiri, they carried more than people and pageantry, they carried the story of a people, the pride of a Kingdom and a vision of a future where our culture, waterways and communities become catalysts for tourism, enterprise and sustainable development,” he said.

The Olu described the Warri Regatta as a celebration of identity, continuity and possibility, noting that the event also marked five years of a journey that has sought to strengthen the connection between the Kingdom’s heritage and its future.

He said the regatta provided an avenue to celebrate the past, affirm the present and envision new possibilities for the future of the Warri Kingdom.

“The Warri Regatta was, beyond just a commemoration of five remarkable years, a statement of identity, continuity and possibility. It celebrated our past, affirmed our present and charted a course for the future,” Ogiame Atuwatse III stated.

The Olu’s remarks underline the potential of cultural events such as the regatta to promote the Warri Kingdom’s heritage while creating platforms for tourism, community participation, enterprise and sustainable development.
