Comrade Sonia Unobunjo has been re-elected as Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Delta State Chapter, following a peaceful election /formal inauguration held during the association’s 2025 Triennial Delegates Conference at the NUJ Press Centre, Mariam Babangida Way, Asaba.

The event, which brought together media professionals, past leaders, and stakeholders from across the South-South zone, served both as a statutory gathering and a rallying point for renewed commitment to the ideals of professionalism, inclusion, and empowerment of women in journalism.

In her welcome address, Comrade Unobunjo expressed gratitude to the delegates, guests, and members of the association for their support, describing the conference as “a celebration of progress, a platform for reflection, and a call to collective action.”

“As women journalists, we stand at the frontline of truth, justice, and advocacy,” she said. “In an era marked by misinformation, gender-based discrimination, and increasing threats to press freedom, our role has never been more critical.”

She commended the resilience and dedication of women journalists across the state and paid tribute to the national leadership of NAWOJ and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) for their continued support and partnership.

The theme of the conference, “The Woman I Am, The Woman I Lead: The Role of Women Journalists in Society,” set the tone for robust discourse on the evolving responsibilities of women in the media space and the need for capacity building, solidarity, and ethical leadership.

Delivering the keynote address, Deputy National Chairperson of NAWOJ, Dr Lilian Okonkwo-Ogabu, emphasised the need for unity and continuous professional development among women journalists.

“Let us not forget to support one another,” she said. “As we care for others through our work, we must also care for ourselves. Our strength lies in our ability to uplift and empower each other.”

Dr Okonkwo-Ogabu also called on the new leadership to foster an environment that promotes collaboration, growth, and development, stressing that the collective advancement of NAWOJ must remain a priority.

The highlight of the congress was the dissolution of the outgoing executive and the inauguration of a new leadership team, with all candidates returned unopposed in a transparent and hitch-free electoral process.

“This second tenure is a call to serve even more diligently. Together, we will uphold the values of professionalism and build a more united and impactful NAWOJ Delta,” she affirmed.

Also speaking at the event, NUJ Delta State Council Chairman, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, congratulated the newly elected officers and commended the peaceful conduct of the congress.

He urged the new leadership to prove sceptics wrong by steering the association towards greater unity and purpose.

“We must take bold steps that reflect our strength and organisation as journalists,” he said. “Let this new chapter be marked by collaboration, discipline, and service.”

The Chairperson of the Credentials and Electoral Committee, Comrade Bridget Agetu, recounted the journey of the electoral process, noting that the committee, constituted in July, worked diligently to ensure transparency and inclusiveness. She lauded the members for their cooperation and charged the new executive to lead with vision and accountability.
