22 years ago, we bought ourselves a teakwood swing for our first anniversary. They say teak can last a century, and we liked the symbolism. We wanted a love that was built to last.
This swing has held us through it all. The wood has stood strong, even as other parts have gently worn. It’s a testament to what “tried and true” really means.
Last year, my husband, in a sweet attempt to give me something new, replaced it. When I came home and saw the replacement swing, my heart sank. I realized then that some things aren’t about being new; they’re about being ours. This swing is the physical memory of our promise. Seeing my heart, he had our old swing back into the house, the very next day.
That’s the lesson, after 23 years: Ours is a love that chooses the timeless over the new, that honors the foundation we built together. Happy Anniversary to the keeper of my heart, and all our memories.
