The Federal Government has instituted a 13-count charge before the Federal High Court in Abuja against individuals accused of plotting to overthrow President Bola Tinubu.
The suspects include a retired major general, a retired naval captain, a serving police inspector, and three others. They are alleged to have engaged in acts of treason, terrorism, and attempts to wage war against the Nigerian state.
The development follows earlier tensions in October 2025, when the government announced the cancellation of a planned parade to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary on October 1. The decision had sparked speculation linking it to an alleged coup plot.
However, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) dismissed such claims, maintaining that the cancellation of the event was unrelated to any security threats or coup attempt.
Subsequent reports indicated that at least 16 military officers were arrested in the first week of October over the alleged plot, while two others were declared at large.
The case is expected to test the government’s stance on national security and its response to threats against constitutional order.
