The All Progressives Congress (APC) has launched a scathing attack on former Rivers State Governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, over his reported claims of financial hardship and his inability to afford medication for his late mother.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, October 4, 2026, the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, described Amaechi as a “loafer” outside public office and questioned his suitability for the vice-presidential position.
The party began the statement by offering prayers for the repose of Amaechi’s late mother, Dame Ezinne Mary Oduah Amaechi, and wishing the former governor “excellent health of mind and body.”
The APC subsequently mocked Amaechi over his reported account of his financial difficulties, particularly claims that he had become so financially constrained that his wife was feeding him and that he could not afford medications for his mother’s treatment.
According to Morka, Amaechi had spent decades occupying senior public offices, including serving as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, governor of Rivers State and Minister of Transportation.
The APC argued that Amaechi’s reported financial struggles after leaving public office raised questions about his ability to sustain himself outside government patronage.
“For four decades, Rotimi Amaechi freeloaded at the highest levels of public office,” the party alleged, adding that he had been able to afford his needs while in government but had allegedly become financially distressed only a few years after leaving office.
The ruling party further described Amaechi as “a loafer, aimless and irresponsible” for what it characterised as his inability to earn a living outside public office.
The APC also criticised Amaechi’s ambition to become vice president in the 2027 general elections, alleging that he sought the position to continue benefiting from public resources.
“The presidency is not a soup kitchen and will not be a soup kitchen for Rotimi Amaechi,” Morka stated.
The party concluded that Amaechi’s own reported comments about his financial circumstances constituted, in its view, evidence of his unsuitability for the vice-presidential office.
“No one can speak more to Rotimi Amaechi’s unfitness for the office of Vice President than Rotimi Amaechi himself,” the APC said.
Amaechi is currently the ADC’s vice-presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
