The public execution of notorious armed robber Ishola Oyenusi and members of his gang remains one of the most dramatic moments in Nigeria’s crime-fighting history. On September 8, 1971, Oyenusi and six accomplices were executed by firing squad at Bar Beach before a massive crowd estimated at about 30,000 people.
The execution was carried out by the Nigerian government as part of a tough crackdown on armed robbery and violent crime during the early 1970s. Authorities intended the public spectacle to serve as a strong warning to criminals and reassure citizens that the government was serious about restoring law and order.
According to North Book, the event drew widespread public attention, with thousands gathering at Bar Beach to witness the historic execution, which later became one of the most talked-about anti-crime measures in Nigeria’s post-independence era.
