The Benin Royal Family has firmly denied any involvement of the Palace of the Oba of Benin in the recent assault on Dr. Don Pedro Obaseki, warning individuals and groups spreading such claims to desist or face consequences.
In a statement jointly signed by the Odion’Egbee of the Benin Royal Family, Prince Nikaro Eweka, and the Secretary of the Family, Dr. Kayode Eweka, the family expressed deep concern over what it described as deliberate attempts by “malicious elements and agents of discord” to link the revered Palace to the incident.
The statement categorically declared that the Palace of the Oba of Benin neither supported, authorized, encouraged, nor gave approval—directly or indirectly—for the alleged assault on Dr. Obaseki.
According to the Royal Family, any suggestion to the contrary is false and constitutes a serious affront to the dignity, values, and centuries-old traditions of the Benin monarchy. The statement emphasized that the Oba of Benin remains a father to all, a symbol of unity, and a custodian of sacred laws that strongly abhor violence against any son or daughter of the kingdom.
“To insinuate otherwise,” the statement noted, “is to demonstrate a reckless disregard for Benin culture and the sanctity of the Palace of the Oba of Benin.”
The Benin Royal Family consequently issued what it described as a “stern and final warning” to rumor-mongers, social media users, and attention-seekers who continue to spread what it called dangerous falsehoods. It stressed that the Palace should not be used as fodder for gossip or exploited for cheap publicity on social media.
Describing the ancient throne of Benin as a sacred institution revered for over a millennium, the family warned that it would not allow the Palace to be dragged into disrepute through online mischief or character assassination.
The statement further disclosed that the Royal Family is closely monitoring ongoing narratives surrounding the incident, warning that any further attempt to associate the Palace with the alleged assault or any scandalous activity would be treated as a deliberate act of cultural disrespect and cyber-terrorism.
It added that appropriate traditional, social, and legal measures would be taken to safeguard the sanctity of the Throne and the Benin Royal Family.
