Better a Broken Courtship Than a Broken Marriage: Sister Ruth Urges Singles to Heed Red Flags Before Saying “I Do”

Relationship adviser and Christian voice Sister Ruth of Abuja has encouraged singles and intending couples to prioritize wisdom and character over emotions when making marital decisions, stressing that it is better for a courtship to end than for a marriage to collapse.

According to Sister Ruth, while the end of a relationship can be deeply painful, it is often a far better outcome than enduring the lifelong consequences of a broken marriage.

She emphasized that not every relationship is destined to lead to the altar, noting that sometimes the greatest expression of love is having the courage to walk away when serious warning signs become impossible to ignore.

Addressing singles, she warned against overlooking red flags with the hope that marriage would change a partner’s character.

“Marriage does not magically transform character,” she said. “Instead, it often reveals it more clearly.”

She cautioned that persistent dishonesty, disrespect, abuse, manipulation, uncontrolled anger, or a lack of godly values during courtship should never be dismissed or excused with the expectation that marriage will resolve such issues.

Sister Ruth advised intending couples to make thoughtful and prayerful decisions by asking important questions, seeking wise counsel, and paying closer attention to character than chemistry. She also urged them not to allow the fear of starting over to push them into marriages they may later regret.

Offering words of encouragement, she prayed that God would grant every intending couple peace, wisdom, and clarity as they prepare for marriage, expressing hope that every decision they make would lead them closer to God’s purpose for their lives.

She concluded with a powerful reminder: “A cancelled wedding may cause temporary pain, but a broken marriage can leave lifelong scars. Choose peace over pressure, wisdom over emotions, and purpose over appearances.”
