The Borno State Government has introduced 20 electric mass transit buses as part of efforts to reduce the impact of rising transportation costs on residents.
Governor Babagana Umara Zulum approved the immediate deployment of the buses to improve mobility and provide affordable transport options, especially following recent increases in petrol prices.
The initiative builds on a broader rollout of electric-powered transport solutions inaugurated by Bola Ahmed Tinubu on December 20, 2025. The programme also included 3,000 electric bicycles, 500 electric tricycles, and 100 electric vehicles aimed at modernizing transportation across the state.
Deployment of the buses began on April 3, with the fleet consisting of 17 buses with 49-seat capacity, two 37-seaters, and one 28-seater. The vehicles are currently operating along major routes within Maiduguri and surrounding areas to ease commuting challenges.
The air-conditioned, energy-efficient buses are capable of traveling more than 400 kilometres on a single charge, offering a sustainable alternative to fuel-powered transport. The initiative also complements earlier investments by the Zulum administration in buses and salon cars to strengthen the state’s public transport system.
