Cameroon’s President Paul Biya has returned to the capital, Yaoundé, after spending more than 10 weeks outside the country, ending his longest recorded absence from Cameroon since he came to power more than four decades ago.
Biya’s prolonged stay abroad had fueled widespread speculation about his health and whereabouts, with heightened public interest in recent weeks over the 93-year-old president’s condition.
The president’s return brings an end to weeks of uncertainty surrounding his absence from the country and comes amid growing attention to his health and ability to continue carrying out his official duties.
Biya, who has ruled Cameroon since 1982, is one of the world’s longest-serving heads of state. His extended periods abroad in the past have also occasionally triggered questions about his health and governance.
His latest return to Yaoundé is therefore expected to attract significant political attention as the government continues to address public concerns over the president’s health and leadership.
More details are expected to emerge following his arrival in the Cameroonian capital.
