President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, on his victory in the August 15 governorship election, while cautioning him against viewing the outcome as a conquest over his political opponents.
Adeleke had visited the President to express his appreciation for what he described as the Federal Government’s commitment to providing a level playing field for all contestants during the election.
Responding to the governor, President Tinubu said the victory should be regarded as the outcome of a democratic process rather than the defeat or conquest of another person.
“You did not conquer anybody. You won an election,” the President told Adeleke, stressing the importance of humility and respect for the democratic process.
The President’s remarks underscore the need for political leaders to see elections as opportunities to serve the people rather than occasions for triumph over opponents.
The August 15 election saw Adeleke emerge victorious, following a closely watched contest that attracted significant political attention in the state.
Adeleke’s visit to the President was also seen as an opportunity to acknowledge the role played by the Federal Government in ensuring that the election was conducted in an environment where contestants could compete on a relatively even footing.
Tinubu urged the governor to focus on governance and the welfare of the people of Osun State, rather than allowing the outcome of the election to fuel political divisions.
The President’s message comes amid calls for elected leaders to embrace reconciliation and extend the dividends of democracy to all citizens, irrespective of their political affiliations.
