The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured Nigerians of its preparedness for the 2027 general election, despite the delay in the passage of the amended Electoral Act currently before the National Assembly.
The Commission disclosed that it has concluded work on the election timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 polls.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, made this known on Wednesday in Abuja during a meeting with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs).
According to him, while INEC has already made its submissions to the National Assembly on the proposed amendments to the Electoral Act, the Commission is aware that delays in the legislative process could affect some aspects of its planned schedule.
Amupitan noted that certain activities in the election timetable may need adjustment depending on when the amended law is eventually passed by lawmakers.
He, however, stressed that INEC has no option for now but to operate within the framework of the existing Electoral Act.
“Despite the delay, the Commission has finalised the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general election. However, some components may be impacted by the timing of the amendment’s passage. For now, we will continue to rely on the subsisting Electoral Act,” the INEC chairman said.
INEC reiterated its commitment to conducting a credible, transparent, and timely election, regardless of legislative uncertainties.
