ABUJA — Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has received the Christian Icon Award from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in recognition of his commitment to ethical leadership, compassionate public service and Christian values in governance.
The award was presented on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at the National Christian Centre in Abuja during activities marking CAN’s 50th anniversary celebration.
According to a press release issued by Dr. Ebojele Akhere Patrick, Chief Press Secretary to the governor, CAN President, Most Rev. Daniel C. Okoh, and the co-chairmen of the anniversary planning committee, Boss Mustapha and Archbishop Michael Akinwale, said the honour recognised Okpebholo’s contributions to public service and his impact on the Christian community.
The organisers noted that the award was designed to recognise leaders who demonstrate excellence, integrity and commitment to nation-building while upholding the values of faith and service in their public responsibilities.
Reacting to the recognition, Okpebholo expressed appreciation to CAN, describing the award as a motivation to intensify his efforts towards improving the lives of the people of Edo State and Nigerians in general.
“I am humbled by this recognition from CAN. It is a reminder that leadership is service, and it pushes me to do more for the people of Edo State and for Nigeria,” the governor said.
Okpebholo, who assumed office on November 12, 2024, has anchored his administration on the SHINE Agenda, which focuses on security, healthcare, infrastructure, natural resources, agriculture and education.
The governor’s receipt of the award formed part of CAN’s Golden Jubilee activities, which celebrate the association’s contributions to the Christian community and national development.
Founded in 1976, CAN serves as the umbrella body for Christian denominations in Nigeria and has continued to engage on issues concerning faith, governance, national unity and social development.
