A commercial motorcyclist has lost his life after he was swept away by floodwaters in Agbor, the headquarters of Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State.
The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday night along Imudia Street after a torrential rainfall that lasted from about 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., leaving several parts of the town heavily flooded.
According to eyewitnesses, the rider had parked his motorcycle close to a concrete drainage channel before taking shelter in a nearby makeshift shop as the downpour intensified.
However, the force of the flood reportedly swept his motorcycle into the fast-flowing drainage. In an attempt to recover the bike, the rider entered the floodwaters but was overwhelmed by the strong current and swept away.
Residents later recovered his body, bringing the desperate rescue attempt to a tragic end.
The prolonged rainfall caused widespread flooding across Agbor, with drainage channels overflowing and powerful currents running through several streets, disrupting movement and endangering residents.
The incident comes amid growing concerns over the impact of heavy rains in Delta State.
Earlier, floodwaters inundated the premises of the Delta State Broadcasting Service (DBS) in Asaba following another heavy downpour on Thursday, July 9, 2026, forcing the suspension of activities at the state-owned radio and television station.
Videos shared on social media showed large volumes of water submerging sections of the station along DBS Road, raising concerns among residents and stakeholders about the recurring flooding at the facility.
According to reports, the flooding halted operations at the station. Sources also described the situation as a longstanding challenge that has persisted for years without a permanent solution from the relevant authorities.
