The Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Sylvester Nwakuche, has charged 185 newly graduated Chief Superintendent of Corrections officers to uphold professionalism, integrity and accountability as they assume greater responsibilities in the Service.
The officers graduated from the 9th Chief Superintendent of Corrections (CSC) Development Course at the Nigerian Correctional Academy, Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun State, on Friday, October 23, 2026, after completing a 12-week intensive training programme.
The course, which commenced on August 3, 2026, was designed to strengthen the officers’ leadership capacity, administrative competence and operational effectiveness in preparation for higher responsibilities within the Nigerian Correctional Service.
Nwakuche gave the charge in an address delivered on his behalf by the Assistant Controller-General of Corrections and Zonal Coordinator, Zone A, Raphael Unazi, during the graduation ceremony.
He congratulated the officers on completing the programme and urged them to become catalysts of change in line with the evolving demands of modern correctional administration.
The Controller-General stressed the need for the officers to uphold integrity, discipline, loyalty and professionalism in the discharge of their duties, while strictly complying with the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2019, Standing Orders and other extant regulations.
He noted that the success of the training would ultimately be measured by how effectively the officers applied the knowledge and skills acquired to their conduct, leadership and service delivery.
According to him, the Service is implementing reforms to strengthen professional standards and improve operational efficiency across its custodial and non-custodial operations.
Among the initiatives highlighted were the introduction of the Unified Lecture Training Manual and Unified Professional Course Badges, designed to standardise training and reinforce professional identity among personnel.
Nwakuche also emphasised the importance of the Performance Management System, which focuses on productivity, accountability, efficiency and measurable results.
He urged the graduates to align their duties with established performance targets and contribute meaningfully to the overall objectives of the Service.
The Controller-General commended the management of the Academy, directing staff and instructors for their dedication to personnel development and the maintenance of professional training standards.
He also acknowledged the support of the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for ongoing institutional reforms and efforts to enhance personnel capacity within the Service.
Earlier, the Commandant of the Nigerian Correctional Academy, Assistant Controller-General of Corrections Ezenwa Rita Nonye, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to producing disciplined, knowledgeable and professionally competent officers capable of meeting the changing demands of correctional administration.
Nonye commended the graduating officers for their commitment and conduct throughout the 12-week programme and appreciated the instructors and directing staff for their contributions to the successful completion of the course.
She urged the officers to translate the knowledge and skills acquired into improved performance in their respective commands and formations.
The Executive Chairman of Ijebu North Local Government, Hon. Omobolaji Odusanya, was also present at the ceremony and congratulated the Service and the graduating officers on the achievement.
The graduation of the 9th CSC Development Course marks another milestone in the Academy’s efforts to strengthen leadership and professional capacity within the Nigerian Correctional Service.
In a statement issued on October 23, 2026, and signed electronically by the Academy’s Public Relations Officer, DSC B. K. Adeoye, the Service said the ceremony signified not only the completion of a training programme but also the beginning of renewed responsibility for the officers to serve with honour, integrity and commitment.
