The Federal High Court in Abuja has halted ongoing moves by the Bayelsa State House of Assembly to impeach the state’s Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.
In a ruling delivered on October 27, Justice Emeka ordered the Bayelsa State House of Assembly and its Speaker to appear before the court and show cause why they should not be restrained from proceeding with any impeachment action against the Deputy Governor.
The order followed an ex-parte motion marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2219/2025, filed by Ewhrudjakpo against the State Assembly and its Speaker.
In the suit, Ewhrudjakpo is seeking an interim order restraining the Assembly from initiating any impeachment proceedings against him over his refusal to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) before the expiration of his four-year tenure.
The Deputy Governor also sought a court order restraining the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Attorney-General of Bayelsa State from withdrawing his security protection pending the determination of the substantive motion.
After considering the application, Justice Emeka directed the defendants to appear in court to defend their actions and adjourned the case to November 13, 2025, for the hearing of the motion on notice seeking an interlocutory injunction.
