A Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed Friday, May 8, to hear a suit seeking to stop former President Goodluck Jonathan from contesting the 2027 presidential election.

The case, which has drawn significant political attention, is aimed at restraining Jonathan from participating in the next presidential race over questions surrounding his constitutional eligibility.

During proceedings on April 28, Justice Peter Lifu directed that hearing notices be issued and served on the defendants, following their failure to file responses before the court.

The suit is expected to test legal interpretations surrounding presidential term limits and whether the former president can lawfully seek another term in office.

Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president between 2010 and 2015, has recently been at the centre of public debate following comments suggesting he could consider returning to presidential politics after consultations.

The scheduled hearing is likely to attract nationwide interest as political discussions ahead of the 2027 general elections continue to gather momentum.
