The Cross River State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of a 14-year-old girl, identified as Nancy Peter, following an incident that allegedly occurred during a deliverance session in the state.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Command’s spokesperson, Eitokpah Sunday, said investigators are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to the police, preliminary findings indicate that the teenager was allegedly subjected to corporal punishment during a deliverance session conducted by a 43-year-old cleric. Investigators also allege that the minor may have been assaulted by her mother before the incident.
The police said the teenager reportedly became unconscious and was taken to a medical facility in Wula Community for treatment, where she was later pronounced dead by medical personnel.
Eitokpah stated that the ongoing investigation will determine the extent of involvement of all individuals connected to the case, adding that appropriate legal action will be taken based on the outcome of the inquiry.
The Command also addressed reports circulating on social media alleging that the teenager was sexually assaulted.
“At this stage, investigations have not established any evidence to substantiate such claims. Relevant medical examinations and investigative procedures are ongoing to ascertain the facts,” the statement said.
The police urged members of the public to refrain from speculation and allow investigators to complete their work, assuring that updates would be provided as more information becomes available.
The case remains under investigation.
