The Vice-Chancellor of Delta State University, Abraka (DELSU), Professor Samuel Asagba, has reaffirmed his commitment to sustaining the institution’s leading status among state-owned universities in Nigeria.
Speaking on Tuesday during a press briefing to mark his one year in office, Prof. Asagba said the university has recorded significant progress and now ranks among the top twelve universities in the country.
The briefing also served as a prelude to the university’s upcoming convocation ceremony scheduled for this weekend.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, his administration remains focused on elevating DELSU to global standards. “My vision is to make DELSU a centre of academic excellence that produces employable graduates with strong critical thinking skills and a deep sense of nationalism,” he stated.
Reflecting on his time in office, which he described as one year and four months, Asagba noted that several reforms have been implemented to improve the welfare of both staff and students. He added that many academic and non-academic staff have benefited from promotions during this period, assuring that inclusiveness remains a priority of his administration.
He further disclosed that various infrastructure projects are ongoing, including the renovation of lecture halls and theatres, as part of a long-term plan to upgrade facilities across the institution.
Addressing concerns from journalists, the Vice-Chancellor assured that tuition fees would remain unchanged, emphasizing that there are no plans for an increase.
In addition, he revealed plans to launch a fundraising initiative aimed at boosting sports development in the university. He said efforts would be made to engage prominent Deltans and well-meaning Nigerians for support.
Prof. Asagba also highlighted improvements in campus discipline, noting that issues such as extortion and sexual harassment, which were previously of concern, have been significantly addressed. He urged both staff and students to maintain high standards of conduct.
